Laurie Penny, the very fine writer who writes for various good UK publications, is offering a small income for some research work. Her ad is here. While I don't always agree with her, her writing is very well thought out and a welcome breath of fresh air from the often highly biased writing of many political commentators on both sides of the fence.

Bullshittery of the Day award: Abtran

The bullshitter of the day award goes to Mr Michael Fitzgerald of Abtran in Cork, for this wonderful answer to the question of what levels of salaries the 300 new jobs coming to his company Abtran are likely to be on offer.

I really had to laugh. Aside from the "em . . . . em . . . . em . . . em" that went on for about 1 minute, the bullshittery involved in saying "competitive" is the usual clear sign that the jobs are a) Fás level, b) the minimum wage or c) potentially unlike to ever materialize at all, like similar service centres previously announced in Cork like this one (200 jobs announced, no more than 100 ever materialized, mostly in the 20k-23k per annum salary level, and place shut down almost entirely with a cumulative loss of about 90 roles over the 5 years), this one (1100 jobs promised, none ever materialized) and my special current favourite, this one (need I say any more).

Blowing out the Bosco "AIDS" myth

There has been a myth circulating for years that one of the presenters of 1970s RTE children's series Bosco died of AIDS.

Its complete shite actually. In fack the presenter is alive and well and still acting. Its incredible the prejudice against gay men and people with HIV that a man whose sexuality was not a major secret was assumed to have been consumed by the "gay plague." In fact he just a year or two ago did an excellent series of drag mimics of a major female politician and even the Taoiseach's now ex-mistress!

Jean Byrne's Meteoric Rise

With my job on the line and the daunting thought of having to move back to Dublin after being away from it 9 years, I have become addicted to the weather forecast. Yes, you heard me right, and not just about the icy conditions of the roads or possible frost on my remaining window boxes outside. Its the marvellously glamorous meteorologist Jean Byrne on RTE which has me hooked.




Basically whatever happened in the wardrobe department last year, Jean's wardrobe sense has taken on a life of its own. Its wonderful! As somebody posted on twitter earlier: "bondage lite." For example, the other day, while seriously describing weather patterns across Europe, I couldn't help noticing that she had her fingernails painted black. Yes black.
